ABSTRACT
Divorce and remarriage are increasingly more frequent in the Mexican society. A high percentage of couples that enter remarriage have adolescent children, which tend to exacerbate the usually difficult adaptation periods of these families.
The main purposes of the present study included designing and calibrating a specific questionnaire to assess this family interaction and examining the impact of adolescents on remarriage couples. This impact was evaluated in three types of relationships: 276 individuals in remarriage living together; 192 individuals in remarriage not living together and 201 individuals living in original marriage. From the standpoint of couples, marital satisfaction is higher for those living together in remarriage, as compared with either those in first marriage or those in remarriage living apart. Men in remarriage living together reported the highest level of marital satisfaction and women did so in original marriage. Regarding relationships with the adolescents, stepfathers reported higher negative interaction in the remarriage living together condition. Mothers reported more negative interaction with the adolescent in the remarriage not living together condition. When adolescents lived with their biological father and a stepmother, negative interaction was higher. The lower the parents’ educational record, the worse the interaction with the adolescents. Adolescents reported the poorest levels of interaction when they lived with their father and a stepmother.
