ABSTRACT
The invasion of the airway with devices which allow the connection to a mechanical ventilator and the maintenance of positive pressure for the patients with respiratory failure have been used alongside many years. It has been possible the wide use of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) in the clinical work according to the knowledge and the advances in the technology of mechanical ventilators in the past decade. The term NIPPV is applied to any form of ventilatory support without the use of endotracheal tube. NIPPV implies the use of other non invasive devices of airways but it allow the connection of ventilator to the patient. NIPPV can be used in a wide variety of medical and surgical patients with respiratory failure, however the success of this procedure is related to an adequate selection of the patients. NIPPV can be applied with different kinds of mechanical ventilators using different modes of ventilation. NIPPV has been employed successfully in several areas of hospital as emergency room, intensive care unit or general room. In comparison with invasive mechanical ventilation NIPPV has certain advantages: comfort, safety and low costs. In the other hand, NIPPV has limitations and complications; the recognition and the early treatment of these, is important for the success of procedure.
