ABSTRACT
Introduction: Candida albicans is considered the most common fungi associated to vaginitis, but other Candida species have been documented. The objective is looking for the incidence of species of non-albicans Candida in the gynecology consultation.
Objective: Know the prevalence of Candida non albicans species in the gynecological consultation.
Material and methods: 250 patients were included and divided into three groups: 100 women with vaginitis symptoms; 100 asymptomatic and 50 women evaluated for infertility. We obtained two samples, from the uterine cervix and the vaginal wall, for Candida identification. Candida was isolated in Sabouraud medium. The identification of the species was made with substrate reaction analysis API 20 C AUX (bioMerieux). Statistical analysis was done by chi square.
Results: Of 24 positive cases in the symptomatic group, 18 were of glabrata sp. and 6 were Albicans sp. We found 21 positive cases of Candida in the asymptomatic women; 10 corresponded to C. albicans; 9 to C. glabrata; 1 C. famata and 1 C. tropicalis. There were 13 positive cases of Candida in the group of infertile patients; 6 were of C. albicans, 6 of C. glabrata and 1 C. tropicalis. In the first two groups we found 73 patients with repetitive vulvovaginitis, in these patients we found 22 positive cases for Candida; 5 were C albicans and 17 were C. glabrata (P‹0.001). The KOH test was positive in 27 cases (46.1%).
Conclusions: C. glabrata was the most common Candida species in patients with symptomatic and recurrent vaginitis.
