ABSTRACT
Introduction: HELLP syndrome is a multisystemic disease and may be associated with preeclampsia or eclampsia; its mortality is high.
Objective: To know the morbidity and mortality due to HELLP syndrome in Yucatan.
Design: Descriptive and multicentric study.
Setting: ICUs of three hospitals, Merida Yucatan; Mexico.
Patients: Forty patients (mean age 25 ± 7 yrs) with HELLP syndrome, during a 14-month period.
Methods: It was used the 3-class system of classification (Mississippi). Clinical features, gestational age, resolution of pregnancy, laboratory findings and morbidity and maternal mortality was evaluated.
Results: Of the total of 40 patients, 17 (42.5%), 18 (45%) and 5 (12.5%) corresponded to class I, II and III, respectively. Twenty (50%) patients suffered preeclampsia and 12 (30%) eclampsia; in the rest of patients was not detected hypertensive disease associated to pregnancy. Nine (22.5%) patients developed acute renal failure. The mortality rate was 7.5%.
Conclusions: In this study, HELLP syndrome was associated to a low mortality rate.
