ABSTRACT
Introduction:The change in the human body composition during the course of life depends on auxological differences of gender and other factors. The measurement of its components also allows us to assess the prevalence of overweight and obesity.
Objectives: To determine the prevalence of overweight, obesity and analyze body composition in children and adolescents in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, Mexico.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was performed in 759 children and adolescents from one private and two public schools. Somatometric data and body composition determined by bioelectrical impedance were obtained. Prevalence of overweight and obesity and correlation between fat mass and body mass index. The Multiple linear regression analysis was determined by the STATA 8.0 program.
Results: The average age average was 12.3 years ± 2.5 (48.7% female and 51.3% male). Our results showed a prevalence of 18.3% for overweight and 23.3% for obesity in the private school and 21.5% and 11.4% in the public schools respectively. Fat mass, lean mass and total corporal water show a progressive increase by age. Boys have a greater amount of lean mass than girls at all ages. The correlation between fat mass and the BMI was 0.93 for boys and 0.95 for girls.
Conclusions: The bioelectrical impedance is an innocuous method and easy to utilize. The values of the corporal composition vary by age and gender. Good correlation between fat mass and the BMI exists. The high prevalence of overweight and obesity confirm the necessity for intervention.
