ABSTRACT
Rhinophyma, a word derived from the Greek rhino-nose and phyma-growth, is a deforming and progressive disease characterized by the thickening of the skin of the nose, hyperplasia of the sebaceous glands, occlusion of the ducts with formation of cysts and a certain degree of fibrosis. Diverse factors for the development of rhinophyma have been proposed, such as vitamin deficiencies, hormonal components, stress, alcoholism or infections, but the only etiologically confirmed cause is its relationship with acne rosacea, of which rhinophyma is its most severe form. The case of one patient with rhinophyma is communicated in the present paper. A double surgical approach was used in him, which consisted of a total thickness excision of the skin with direct closure, more tangential excision with a razor blade and placement of a fine mesh over the nose. A gauze with “petroleum jelly” was placed after the procedure, which began to peel off after the fifth day and was completely taken off on the 12th day post surgery. The patient was treated on an outpatient basis and recovery went without complications. The results of this technique were satisfactory.REFERENCES
