ABSTRACT
Twelve percent of fractures in children are related to the supracondylar humerus region. Neurological injuries can results as a consequence of the fracture or the treatment of supracondylar fractures of the humerus. We studied 85 patients, 45 males and 40 females at the A.B.C. Hospital in Mexico City age ranged between 1 and 16 years old, with supracondylar fractures of the humerus from january 1991 and april 1996. We found 13 cases with neurologic injury (15.2%), 11 previous to the treatment and 2 after. The most commonly affected nerve was the radial in 7 cases (54%), the median nerve in 2 cases (15.3%), the ulnar nerve in 2 cases (15.3%) and the anterior interosseous in 2 cases (15.3%). Most injuries were found in the 6-10 years old group. 92% of the neurologic injuries were in group IV of Holmberg's classification. The most common lesion was neuropraxia. Nerve injuries were associated to a 66% of fracture dislocations and to a 33% of open fractures.
