ABSTRACT
Preaxial polydactyly is one of the most common congenital deformities. A retrospective study with 50 patients and 60 thumbs, from 1974 through 1996 at Díaz Lombardo, Shriners, Instituto Nacional de Ortopedia and ABC Hospitals was done. They were classified according to Wassel. We made a modification including the type O, which is a soft tissue prominence with or without bone or ungueal tissue at the radial aspect of the first ray. Asurgical criteria was established for each type and the final evaluation was done according to Cheng's. In our series the most common type was the VI1 and we did not find any type VI. The functional and cosmetis results were graded as good in 88.3%, fair 8.3% and poor in 3.3%.
