ABSTRACT
Purpose: To establish an algorithm for medical and surgical rehabilitation in facial palsy.Methods: A prospective, longitudinal, descriptive, non-comparative study of 21 patients with facial palsy was realized. Demographic data was documented (sex and age). Complete ophthalmologic examination and facial muscle function was evaluated. Statistical data analysis was applied to each variable.
Results: Twenty-one patients of 35 were females (60%, ratio 2:1). Average age was 50.48 years. The two mains complain were lagophthalmos (37.1%) and epiphora (25.71%). Most frequent causes were Bell palsy (34.8%) and trauma (20%). Sixty-seven surgical procedures were done, 1.7 averages per patient. The reported procedures were: gold weight implant (33.3%), ectropion correction (38.3%), soof lift and midface lift (10%), eyebrow and lip ptosis 10 (16.5%). The only two complications were gold weight migration and recidivate ectropion.
Conclusion: The most frequent surgical procedure was gold weight implant and ectropion correction. Only 5 midface – soof lift were done in six patients (10%).
