ABSTRACT
Background: Ischemic ocular syndrome is related to carotid atherosclerosis. Prognosis of stroke patient with carotid atherosclerosis is worse when intacranial atherosclerosis coexist.
Objectives: Determine if patients with ischemic ocular syndrome and coexistence of carotid and intracranial atherosclerosis have worse prognosis than patients with ischemic ocular syndrome with lonely carotid atherosclerosis.
Patients and methods: We studied 13 patients with lonely carotid atherosclerosis vs. 13 patients with coexistence of carotid and intracranial atherosclerosis. We determined the association between visual prognosis and the presence or not of intracranial atherosclerosis by means of odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals, significance was set at 0.05.
Results: There was a male predominance, 69% in solely carotid atherosclerosis and 54% in carotid and intracranial atherosclerosis, with a mean age of 64 and 68 years respectively. There were no differences between groups respecting age, sex nor vascular risk factors. Association was present in the carotid and intacranial atherosclerosis regarding mix retinopathy OR 2.17 (IC95% 1.20–3.90) (p=0.005), severe visual impairment OR 8.80 (IC95% 1.35–57.43) (p=0.016), and binocular visual impairment OR 1.86 (IC 95% 1.12–3.07) (p=0.015).
Conclusion: Intracranial atherosclerosis is a determining factor in the visual prognosis in patients with ischemic ocular syndrome.
