ABSTRACT
Purpose: To make a correlation between visual acuity and manifest refraction evaluated after one year follow up, with accommodation amplitude, pupilar size, contrast sensitivity and centration of ablation.
Methods: We included patients who underwent LASIK with the Visx Start Excimer laser and Moria LS microkeratome, with at least one year follow up. We analyzed uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best-corrected visual acuity (Snellen chart), manifest and cycloplegic refraction preoperative and postoperative, near and far contrast sensitivity (Visitech consultant), pupilar size and mesopic and photopic stimuli, accommodation amplitude (Donder’s method) and postoperative centration of ablation.
Results: We included one hundred eyes of 51 patients. Eighty five percent of the cases had UCVA of 20/30 or better and near vision between 0.5 to 0.75 meters. We found contrast sensitivity test altered, both in high and medium spatial frequencies, 66% of the cases in far and 65% of the cases near. The accommodation amplitude was altered in 12 cases (12%) between 20 to 34 years. A relation between pupilar size, accommodation amplitude and descentration of ablation with visual acuity was not found
Conclusion: Changes in contrast sensitivity can be found after one year of LASIK. Accommodation changes can be observed in myopic patients after LASIK.
