Neuropsychological evaluation pre and post surgery in patients with frontal tumors

ABSTRACT
Frontal tumors represent 16% of all supratentorial neoplasm. They can be present at the same rate in both hemispheres. The symptoms are easily confused as psychiatrics instead of neurological. Meningiomas and astrocitomas (glyomas) show high incidence, some studies have shown 90% of patients who have a frontal tumor, have a deficit in the execution in neuropsychological tests, below percentil 10 according to their group in any of the cognition areas.Executive deficit functions were observed in 78% of patients, while memory and attention deficits were observed in 60%.
Objetive: cognitive function deficit evaluation and the executive functions alteration rank pre and post surgery in patients with frontal tumors.
Methods: there were evaluated 4 patients, 3 women and 1 man between 47-69 years old who had frontal tumors (Meningyoma and astrocitoma). It was used a general trail test for cognitive functions (PIEN), one specific test to evaluate executive functions (WCST) and one scale to identify anxiety and depression grade (EADH).
Results: the presurgycal evaluation of all patients showed memory, attention and oral fluency deficits. The obtained scores in the test for executive functions play all of them below percentil 1. The executive functions more affected in this kind of patients are: incompetency to classify, perseverancies and no profit from verbal feed-back.
Conclusion: the cognositive function deficit is not a early symptom caused by frontal tumors. Surgery of this tumors do not improve impair general cognition. Patients with meningyomas, who went under surgery, had a better prognosis about cognitive functions.
