ABSTRACT
Objective: To demonstrate that amniotic membrane can be used as an alternative for pterygium surgery in order to avoid recidivation.
Material and methods: 103 patients with diagnosis of primary pterygium with more than 3 mm of corneal invasion were studied. The patients were divided at random into four groups. All the patients underwent the same surgical technique except for the closure of the lesion. Group A: primary closure (n = 20), group B. conjuntival auto implant (n = 21, Group C use of amniotic membrane behind the limbus (n = 20) and group D, amniotic membrane further the limbus (n = 42).
Results: The recurrence of the pterygium was as follows: Group A 50%, group B 5%, group C 10 % and group D 3%.
Conclusions: the use of amniotic membrane is an excellent option for the treatment of primary pterygium because of the low frequency o recidivation.
