ABSTRACT
Objective: To identify the ocular alterations of patients with acute leukemia from the Pediatric Hematology Department of "Centro Médico La Raza".
Design: A prospective, observational, transversal, descriptive clinic study was realised.
Material and Methods: The study involved seventy patients with a diagnosis of acute leukemia that were examined by the Ophthalmology Service. A complete ophthalmologic examination was practiced to identify ocular manifestations. The results were analyzed.
Results: The patients studied were predominantly male between four and six years old. The most frequent diagnosis was acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Ophthalmic clinical alterations were found in 52.8%. The most frequent manifestations were seen in the fundus (23 patients), but changes in visual acuity and in the anterior segment were also reported.
Conclusions: All patients with acute leukemia should be evaluated by the ophthalmology service periodically as this may be of prognostic value.
