ABSTRACT
During World War I a tremendous naval accident occurred in Halifax harbor, Nova Scotia. That event motivated Dr. William E. Ladd from Boston to dedicate his life to the surgery of infants and children and to establish the bases for the institution of Pediatric Surgery as a formal specialty. One of Ladd’s best pupils was Dr. Robert E. Gross who, besides being the first who operated successfully on the heart, popularized and solidified Pediatric Surgery for its further recognition.
