ABSTRACT
The aim of the study was to determine the increase of prevalence and severity of dental fluorosis in school age children in the outskirts south of Mexico City: Xochimilco. The concentration of fluorine was investigated in drinking water; it is less than 0.3 ppm. We evaluated 11 year old schoolchildren born and raised in the area under study. The level of dental fluorosis was determined using the Dean’s Modificated Index (DI); subsequently community dental fluorosis Index (CFI) was evaluated through an investigator using the WHO criterion with Kappa value of 0.93. These results were compared with those obtained in a previous study in the same community.
Dental fluorosis in this research was 31.3%, distributed in very slight, 20.86%; slight, 8.59 and moderate 1.85%. The CFI showed a value of 0.43.
Results in proportion of the prevalence and severity of dental fluorosis were compared in both studies.
At the same time, a sampling of the population comparing the results obtained in 2006 with a previous research showed an increase of the prevalence and severity of dental fluorosis.
We conclude that the exposure of multiples fluoride sources could be the reasons for the increase of dental fluorosis. Therefore prevention measures should be implemented in order to eliminate or diminish the risk factors.
