ABSTRACT
Objective: Our aim was to evaluate the visiting professor’s impact on the integral care of patients with diabetes at the Mexican Institute of Social Security’s (IMSS) Family Medicine Unit 1 (UMF 1) in Obregon City, Sonora.
Materials and Methods: An analytical study was carried out at the UMF 1. We included 328 clinical files of patients with diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus, attributed to Family Physician clinics at which health care personnel received Visiting Professor training in two phases: pre-, and post-training. Variables were age, gender, blood pressure, weight, examination of the feet, figures for glycemia, cholesterol, and triglycerides, general urine examination, use of glibenclamid, metformin, and insulin, or drugs in combination, and hygienic-dietary instructions. Analysis included descriptive statistics to characterize the unit and statistical inferential χ
2 test.
Results: Regarding data analyzed prior to and after training, the following were significant: registry of blood pressure and prescription of insulin (p = 0.000 for both); weight (p = 0.049); hygienic-dietary instructions (p = 0.003); figures for glycemia, cholesterol and triglycerides, glibenclamid use, and combination of drugs (p = 0.00 for all of the latter).
Conclusions: The Visiting Professor Program improved the quality of care provided for the patient with diabetes. Thus, an educational plan is important that is not only integrated into the practice of the health personnel, but also into the familial environment and the patient him/herself.
