ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate adolescent alimentary intake habits and their relationship with the nutritional state.
Materials and Methods: We carried out a transversal descriptive study in randomly selected secondary-school students in Obregon City, Sonora, Mexico. The questionnaire applied to study participants included the eight food groups and was validated by experts, with 0.65 reliability . Variables included nutritional age, gender, eating habits, weight, weight, height, Body mass index (BMI), and nutritional state. Data analysis was conducted with was made with descriptive statistics and Spearman’s co-efficient.
Results: We questioned 69 adolescents between 12 and 16 years of age, 59% were females; nutritional habits according to survey evaluation were good to fair in 49.3% of adolescent study participants. Nutritional state was normal in 34 patients, with a non-significant statistical difference (p = 0.814). A total of 52.2% of adolescents referred having three meals to the day, whereas 13% had more than three meals daily. Foods consumed most frequently on a daily basis were 73.9% (grains), 43.5% (milk and its derivatives) and 46.4%, sugars.
Conclusions: These results demonstrate that alimentary habits are not related statistically with the nutritional state; however, we observed clinically that when eating habits are deficient, the adolescent presents malnutrition, overweight, or obesity.
