ABSTRACT
Objectives: To quantify the corneal transoperatory complications with the use of the Hansatome microkeratome© during the performance of LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis) surgery on the first 1500 eyes at the Central Military Hospital and to determine if changes on visual acuity are induced due to technical failure or due to misuse of the microkeratome.
Methods: LASIK surgery was performed on 1500 eyes with a corneal flap created by the Hansatome microkeratome©; all the statistics were recorded after every surgery.
Results: 18 transoperatory complications (Accumulated Incidence 1.2%) that forced the suspension of the LASIK procedure were recorded, the type of complications obtained were: incomplete corneal flap cut (33%), irregular flap cut (27%), descentration of the flap cut (27%), donut flap cut (11%) and free cuts were not presented.
All complications were solved satisfactory on a second surgery time using the same microkeratome and only two of these 18 eyes had a loss on the BSCVA (Best Spectacle Corrected Vision Acuity) of two lines (20/30).
