ABSTRACT
Retinopathy of prematurity can cause irreversible damage to newborn, being a cause of preventable blindness in children. RetCam-120 is a digitalized system that allows real time and direct view of the newborn retina, making eye
screening of these patients easier. The objective of this paper is to determine the inter-observer agreement in the
interpretation of retinal pictures of patients in different stages of ROP.
Patients and methods: Descriptive, comparative and observational study. 19 reconstructed retinal pictures from 10 ROP patients were presented to seven ophthalmologists. They were asked to stratify and classify them. Inter- observer agreement was evaluated.
Results: High correlation was found in the identification of zone I and III and total agreement on diagnosis of plus disease. Agreement was poor in the identification of zone II and stages 1, 2 and 3 and incapacity to detect stage IV A.
Conclusions: Retcam-120 system has advantages in the retinal examination of premature babies but it has some limitations. Despite this limitation this technology could be used along with indirect ophthalmoscopy for better management of patient. Retcam-120 is also an useful tool for documenting the natural history of the disease and in telemedicine practice.
