ABSTRACT
Angle-closure glaucoma (ACG), is an important cause of blindness that mainly affects females. About 3.9 million people in the world will be blind because of this disease by 2010 increasing to 5.3 million by year 2020. Of these numbers, 70% could correspond to female gender. Angle closure glaucoma has a different physiopathology than open angle glaucoma, it appears in smaller frequency than this one and the treatment is different too. The recognition of the individual risk factors, predisposing anatomical characteristics and a detailed clinical exploration of the camerular angle and of the optic disc are the key to establish the correct diagnosis of an ocular disease that could lead the irreversible blindness. Opportune treatment and the accomplishment of a prophylactic iridectomy in patients with high risk of having the disease can considerably improve the prognosis of these patients.
