Glaucoma de ángulo cerrado. Perspectiva actual

RESUMEN
El glaucoma de ángulo cerrado (GAC), es una causa importante de ceguera que afecta principalmente a mujeres, considerándose que 3.9 millones de personas en el mundo estarán ciegas a causa de esta enfermedad para el año 2010, incrementándose a 5.3 millones para el año 2020. De estas cifras, 70% podría corresponder al sexo femenino. El glaucoma de ángulo cerrado tiene una fisiopatología distinta al glaucoma de ángulo abierto, se presenta en menor frecuencia que éste y el tratamiento de ambos es diferente. El reconocimiento de los factores de riesgo individuales, de las características anatómicas predisponentes así como una detallada exploración clínica del ángulo camerular y del nervio óptico son la clave para establecer el diagnóstico correcto de una enfermedad ocular que, de no tratarse de manera adecuada, conduce a la ceguera irreversible. El tratamiento oportuno e inclusive la realización de una iridectomía profiláctica en pacientes con alto riesgo de tener la enfermedad pueden mejorar considerablemente el pronóstico de estos pacientes.
