ABSTRACT
Purpose: To evaluate comparatively Ahmed implant versus sclerectomy for the treatment of neovascular glaucoma.Patients and methods: All records of 16 patients that underwent sclerectomy and 43 patients that underwent Ahmed implant for the treatment of neovascular glaucoma secondary to diabetic retinopathy were reviewed. We analyzed data that included sex, age, pre and postoperative best corrected visual acuity as well as intraocular pressure and complications such as hiphema, choroidal detachment using t sample test at 3, 6 months and 1 year of follow-up.
Results: The comparison between the two groups regarding intraocular pressure showed a statistical difference (p‹0.05). Percentages also showed a difference in complications being more frequent in the sclerectomy group.
Conclusions. The use of Ahmed implant is a more reliable method than sclerectomy for the treatment of neovascular glaucoma according to our results. In some instances, in which Ahmed implants are not readily available, sclerectomy should be kept in mind as an alternative method of surgical treatment.
