ABSTRACT
This paper reviews the life and work of the great Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani, suggesting the likelihood that he
suffered astigmatism. After a study of his work, ophthalmology suggests that this artists´ paintings and sculptures show features found in the work of patients with astigmatism, like the elongated lines, and the preference for certain angles that do not allow for deformity of profiles. The authors conclude that it is quite possible that the genius suffered this visual defect, and also, if he had been born in our refractive laser ray era, he would not be an advisable candidate for refractive surgery given his particular perspective of the world, which explains the geniality of work.
