ABSTRACT
Purpose: To identify the most important risk factor for corneal graft rejection in our population.
Material and method: An analytic and transversal study of patients with penetrating keratoplasty who presented corneal graft rejection was performed from January 1999 to December 2003.
Results: A total of 23 (20.35%) patients with corneal graft rejection were included. Age range was 21-40 years (39.13%). The most important risk factors were: corneal vascularization 39.13% (66% belonged to the herpetic keratitis group); previous corneal graft rejection; bullous keratopathy 33.33%, herpetic keratitis 30%, leucoma 20%, corneal dystrophy 20% and keratoconus
16.41%.
Conclusion: The most important risk factors for corneal graft rejection were: previous corneal graft rejection, corneal vascularization and herpetic keratitis.
