ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a topic ophthalmic solution of dexamethasone and tobramycin as fixed combination (TDF) versus the concomitant administration of dexamethasone and tobramycin (TDC) in the treatment of inflammation and prophylaxis for infection after cataract surgery with phacoemulsification technique.
Materials and methods: A prospective, randomized, double blind, masked, longitudinal clinical trial was performed. We included 70 patients (70 eyes) with cataract diagnoses. In a randomized way an ophthalmic solution of dexamethasone and tobramycin in fixed combination or in concomitant way were administrated four times a day during 15 days after the surgical procedure. Subsequently evaluations were made at days 2, 7, 14 and 30 of the study; evaluating the safety, efficacy and tolerance.
Results: There was no statistical difference between both groups and no case of endophthalmitis.
Conclusions: Tobramycin and dexamethasone in fixed combination as well as concomitant administration are safe and effective as anti-inflammatory treatment and prophylaxis for ocular infections in patients after cataract surgery with phacoemulsification technique.
