ABSTRACT
Purpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of transcleral diode laser retinopexy and vitrectomy without scleral buckling in primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.
Patients and methods: Eleven consecutive patients with primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment underwent two-port pars plana vitrectomy and transescleral diode laser retinopexy without scleral buckling to reattach the retina. The follow-up period was six months. Patients with chronic detachment, giant retinal tear, history of uveitis, infectious retinopathy, or proliferative vitreoretinopathy were excluded. Design: prospective, no comparative case series.
Results: By six months, ten of eleven retinas were successfully repaired following one operation. One of the retinas redetached two weeks after initial surgery. Final visual acuity in all patients was 20/100 or better in five of the studied cases.
Conclusions: In the pilot series, transescleral diode laser retinopexy combined with vitrectomy served as a safe and effective method to obtain chorioretinal adhesion and relieve vitreous traction in retinal detachment surgery.
