ABSTRACT
Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of vitrectomy combined with intravitreal triamcinolone in patients with diabetic macular edema.
Methods: Patients with macular edema and massive hard exudates involving the fovea were included. All of them underwent a conventional vitrectomy. Two groups were developed, one with 4 mg of intravitreal triamcinolone at the end of the vitrectomy, the other as a control. Ophthalmologic exam and retinal mapping with optical coherent tomography were performed pre and postoperatively in all the patients.
Results: Triamcinolone was used in 10 patients and 5 were the control group. 60% of all the patients improved their visual acuity in one line, there was statistical difference referring to the macular thickness between the two groups at the fourth month of follow up. P: 0.04
Conclusion: Using intravitreal triamcinolone combined with vitrectomy in patients with diabetic macular edema, has not shown any advantages compared with the control group in this series.
