ABSTRACT
Arterial hypertension (AH), a risk factor for developing diabetic retinopathy (DR), is present in up to 90% of Mexican diabetic population. Detecting DR could be associated to undiagnosed or irregularly controlled AH.
Aim: to identify whether AH history and blood pressure levels considered AH were more frequent in patients with DR than in diabetics without it.
Method: 63 patients with DR (group 1) and 63 without it (group 2) were randomly selected and paired by diabetes duration. Rates of AH history, systolic blood pressure (SBP) ›130 mmHg, diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ›80 mmHg and SBP, DBP and mean blood pressure (MBP) means were compared between groups.
Results: AH history rate was similar in both groups. SBP, DBP and MBP were higher in group 1. SBP ›130 mmHg was more frequent in group 1 (p= 0.001, OR 4.98), as well as DBP › 80 mmHg (p= 0.03, OR 2.18).
Conclusion: Although AH history did not differ between groups, DR was statistically associated to AH blood pressure levels, regardless of history. It is suggested that emphasis should be placed in achieving a tight control of blood pressure, besides metabolic control, in order to prevent DR progression.
