ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the family and sporadic cases of chronic open-angle glaucoma (COAG), juvenile open-angle glaucoma (JOAG) and normal tension glaucoma (NTG) in the "Hospital Conde de Valenciana".
Materials and methods: 96 serial patients were studied with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and 181 of their relatives in first grade, divided in 3 groups: COAG (82 index cases), JOAG (7 cases) and NTG (7 cases). In all patients an ophthalmic clinical history, clinical history of glaucoma and genetic history was done. Applanation tonometry, gonioscopy, funduscopy and white-on-white automated perimetry was included, and to the doubtful cases a blue-on-yellow visual field and tomography of the optic nerve was carried out.
Results: 33 families (40,24%) index case with COAG, 3 (42.86%) index case with JOAG and 3 (42.86 %) index case with NTG had a relative at least with glaucoma and it was denominated family pattern, 20 (24.29%) index case with COAG, 1 (14.29%) index case with JOAG and 2 (28.57%) index case with NTG were not found familiar with glaucoma and it was denominated non family pattern (sporadic).
Conclusions: Of 96 index case it was found that 40,63% of the cases with POAG at least had a relative with glaucoma.
