ABSTRACT
Background: Approximately two thirds of cancer patients at advanced stages of the disease suffer from anorexia, significant weight loss and progressive malnutrition (cachexia), affecting response to anti-neoplastic therapies, impairing quality of life and increasing morbidity and mortality in fact, in cancer patients, cachexia is one important factor contributing to death. More often, the clinical relevance in malnutrition is subestimated and the treatment started in advanced stage of the illness. Weight loss in cancer patients has a complex pathogenesis mechanisms, including enhanced energy expenditure with decreased food intake because of the side effects of treatment, pain, hiporexia, starving and early saciety.
Objective: To review of the macronutrients effect in saciety process, and nutritional strategies in cancer patients diet with the aim to avoid loss weight and muscle depletion.
