ABSTRACT
Introduction. Patellar dislocation is a cause of anterior knee pain in children; the incidence and natural history of this disease is unknown in children. Material and methods. We made a retrospective review from 1991 to 2001 in patients with recurrent patellar dislocation, with the purpose of showing the results of the conservative and surgical treatment. Results: Nineteen patients were treated by physiotherapy initially, only 4 had excellent results. Fifteen patients, 19 knees, were under surgical treatment, arthroscopic technique in 13 knees and open technique in 6 knees. Recurrent dislocation occurred in 3 knees with arthroscopic technique and in 5 knees with open technique. Discussion. Conservative treatment has poor results, only 21% of the patients improved with physiotherapy only, the surgical treatment had better results with the arthroscopic technique, however recurrent dislocation was present in both techniques.
