Levels of glycosylated hemoglobin in patients with acute myocardial infarction with and without a previous diabetes mellitus diagnosis

ABSTRACT
Aim: To evaluate serum glycated hemoglobin levels in patients with acute
myocardial infarction with and without previously known diabetes.
Material
and methods: Seventy one patients with acute myocardial infarction with and
without previously known diabetes were assessed respect to glucose, cholesterol,
high density lipoproteins (HDL), low density lipoproteins (LDL), triglycerides,
creatin kinase, glycated hemoglobin (HbA
1c) and
uric acid.
Results: Seventy one patients (51 men and 14 women), 38 known
as diabetics (27 men and 11 women) and 33 (30 men and 3 woman) without previously
known diabetes, the range of age was 56 and 64 years old respectively. Mean levels
of hemoglobin A
1c was 11.62%
for diabetics and 7.93% for those without previously known diabetes. Its important
to note that 22 (66.6%) from patients without previously known diabetes had values
higher than 7%. There was not a significant difference between both groups in
the mean values of total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides,
uric acid, creatin kinase and glycated hemoglobin.
Conclusion: Levels of
glycated hemoglobin may serve as predictor of cardiovascular risk in patients
without previously known diabetes. Key words: Glycated hemoglobin , myocardial
