ABSTRACT
Objective: To know the evolution, causes, frequency, and severity of the complications due to colorectal cancer surgery, with the aim of offering a timely diagnosis and treatment to our patients.
Setting: IMSS UMAE 25 Centro Médico del Noreste, Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico.
Design: Retrospective, descriptive, transversal.
Statistical analysis: Percentages as measure of qualitative variables.
Patients and methods: Retrospective, descriptive, and transversal study of 262 patients subjected to open elective surgery due to colorectal cancer. These patients were referred by their medical units of the general hospital of the zone. Only those patients diagnosed by jeans of the histopathological report were included. Patients were followed for 5 years, from January 2003 to June 2007.
Results: The study comprised 262 patients, mean age of 56 year ±7, 123 (47%) were men and 139 (53%) were women. The most common site of the tumor was the rectosigmoid. Early complications were: hemorrhage (0.7%), seromas (15%), infection of surgical wound (15%), intra-abdominal abscess (6%), leaks or dehiscence of sutures (6%), abdominal sepsis (6%). Late complications were: stenosis (12%) and recurrence of the tumor (10%). Mortality was of 6% (15 patients).
Conclusions: The most common complications associated with colorectal cancer surgery are related with the performed intestinal anastomoses.
