ABSTRACT
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a worldwide public health problem. Polysomnography (PSG) performed in the sleep laboratory is considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of OSAS and for continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) titration. It has been pointed out, however, that PSG is an expensive and complicated procedure requiring experienced, trained personnel; this characteristics make PSG somewhat inaccessible; therefore, simplified methods of diagnosis have been developed. The results obtained using these methods with a certain group of patients proved indistinguishable from the results obtained using the gold standard. We review the advantages and disadvantages of the simplified diagnostic approach in adults with OSAS.
