ABSTRACT
Obstetric hysterectomy it’s a procedure that attempts to preserve the life of a woman. Preparedness of the treatment team reduces maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. The more prepared the team is the more satisfactory the results will be. This study is an observational, retrospective, descriptive and comparative analysis of cases of obstetric hysterectomy which took place at «General Ignacio Zaragoza Regional Hospital» (GIZRH) and the «Angeles Mexico Hospital» (AMH), from January 2005 until December 2006. The main objective of the study was to identify the differences in the management and the incidence associated with obstetric hysterectomy after delivery among these two hospitals. Other review data considered in the study were: indications and types of hysterectomy, intra- and postoperative complications and days of postoperative hospital stay; and some maternal characteristics such as age, parity and previous history of caesarean section delivery. Total obstetric hysterectomy was performed in 19 cases (76%) versus subtotal obstetric hysterectomy in 6 cases (24%). Uterine atony was the most common reason (44%), followed by placenta accreta (28%).
