ABSTRACT
Objective. Analysis of the bibliography on the main aspects of the fat embolism and fat embolism syndrome.
Data collection. Review of the medical literature in English from 1873 to 2007.
Selection of studies. The most relevant articles regarding of fat embolism and fat embolism syndrome.
Date obtainment. The international medical literature from 2006 to 2007 was reviewed about the study of fat embolism and fat embolism syndrome.
Results. The fat embolism and fat embolism syndrome are known since 100 years ago. It is one of the most important causes of morbidity (0.5%-11%), and mortality (10%), in patients with long-bone fractures. The etiology is multifactorial. The pathogenesis of fat embolism may be defined as mechanical blockage of the circulating by fat particles. The classical picture is of cerebral confusion, respiratory distress and petechiae of skin and mucosa are always seen. The diagnosis of exclusion and is based on clinical criteria. Treatment is only on aid and non-specific.
Conclusions. The post-traumatic etiology is a strong circumstantial evidence of fat embolism and fat embolism syndrome. A specific treatment is not existing by now for the fat embolism syndrome. The preventive measures, diagnosis early and adequate treatment is the best therapy during the development of fat embolism syndrome. The immobilization early and adequate diminishes the risk of fat embolism syndrome. The therapy with corticosteroids has benefit in preventing the fat embolism syndrome. The prognosis for patients who survive fat embolism is good.
