ABSTRACT
Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome is a more and more prevalent upheaval in the general population characterized by repetitive episodes of total or partial obstruction in some point of the upper airways airway; associated to hypoxemia and to the increasing respiratory effort that produces dream fragmentation, these with important consequences in the patient´s quality life, not only result in diurnal sleepiness, but also increase the cardiovascular morbi-mortality. Although several predictive models have been developed to improve the certainty of the diagnosis on the basis of clinical criteria, to the date the gold standard for the diagnosis and degree of the continuous treatment still being polisomnography. The use of ventilation with positive airway pressure has been very effective when diminishing the number of events of apnea and hypopnea, although sometimes it is a challenge to obtain a suitable attachment to the treatment by the patient.
