ABSTRACT
Introduction. Systemic inflammation markers and cancer have been associated over the last years. Objectives: To estimate and to know the degree of association between body mass index (BMI) and markers of low-grade systemic inflammation in children with cancer.
Methods. Medical histories were reviewed, and body measurements were made in a series of cases. Anthropometric variables and biochemical markers of systemic inflammation were analyzed. Non-parametric statistics was applied to data.
Results. Twenty-five patients participated. No association between BMI and markers of low-grade systemic inflammation was found. Global prevalence of the inflammatory syndrome was 72%. Fibrinogen showed moderate correlation with C reactive protein (r =0.500) in both, solid and hematologic neoplasms (r =0.621), and with VSG only in the hematologic ones (r =0.605).
Conclusions. No association between markers of systemic inflammation and BMI was found in this study. The prevalence of the inflammatory syndrome is very high.
