ABSTRACT
The objetives of this study were: To control and eradicate Aujeszky's disease (AD) in a multiple site production system by vaccination of the breeding herd and segregated rering and to do an epidemiological line evaluation of three site production by sentinel animals free of AD. The titre of antibodies was evaluated with the serum virus neutralization test (SVN) and the competitive gl + enzyme-linking immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Positivity in all sites was 93.67%. The breeding herd was medicated with antibiotics in the feed to prevent the presentation of opportunistic diseases. To control the outbreak, the breeding herd was vaccinated with a killed virus vaccine with a glycoprotein gl deletion against AD. This vaccination was repeated 21 days later, and the following year. Every pig in the breeding herd was vaccinated every three months. The second year after the outbreak, vaccination was applied to all animals in the breeding herd every four months. To control and eliminate AD, gilts and boars were placed in site 1 for a 6 month period. During the outbreak, piglets were weaned (21 days of age) and sent to a facility outside the system. When signs of AD dissapeared, the piglets were weaned at 18 days of age and segregated to site 2. Methods applied to site 1 (vaccination, segregation rearing, closing the site and medication) were effective to control and eradicate AD in the system. There has not been any case of the disease in sites 2 and 3 since the program started. Furthermore, in site 1, no clinical signs of AD has been reported.
