The purpose of the present study was to determine the frequency of different coccidia species in cat faeces. Three-hundred and sixty-two faecal samples were collected from cats of different age, breed and sex. Samples were analysed by the Faust technique. From the studied samples, one-hundred and forty-five (40%) were positive to coccidia. Coccidia oocysts found in these samples were measured in order to be identified. The following percentages were found: 54.48% (79 cats) positive to
Isospora felis; 10.94% (15 cats) to
I. rivolta; 0.68% (1 cat) to
Besnoitia besnoiti; 2.06% (2 cats) to
Hammondia hammondi; 0.68% (1 cat) to
Sarcocystis spp; and 3.14% (5 cats) to
Toxoplasma gondii. Twenty eight point twenty seven per cent (39 cats) had a mixture of the species mentioned above. It is concluded that the frequency of coccidia in the samples was high and that the genera more often found were:
Isospora felis, I. rivolta and
Toxoplasma gondii. It is important to mention that this last parasite represents a risk to the health of human beings.
