ABSTRACT
Critical illness polyneuropathy is a common complication of sepsis and multiple organ failure. It also has been described as a complication of treatment with steroids, nondepolarizing blocking agents or both, however many autors suggests that critical illness polyneuropathy is associated to multiple factors. Diagnosis is suspect when muscle weaknes and difficulty in weaning from the ventilator is present. Electrophysiologycal studies are necessary for diagnosis. Morphological studies suggests the presence of primary axonal motor polyneuropathy without inflamatory changes.
The purpose of this work is to review the most important causes, physiopathologycal mechanism, clinical charac-teritics, diagnostic methods and therapies of the critically illness polyneuropathy.
