ABSTRACT
Objective: To study the features of the critically ill patient kidney.
Design: Retrospective study.
Setting: ICU of a tertiary care hospital in Mexico City.
Patients: We enrolled 157 ICU patients (71 with Ccr of 100-150 mL/min, grupo A and 83 with Ccr above 150 mL/min, group B) and 18 healthy volunteers, group C.
Interventions: None.
Measurements and main results: Renal function tests were performed in all subjects. Diuresis and osmolar clearance were higher in group B (p ± 0.05); fractional excretion of water was lower in group A (p ± 0.05); creatinine clearance was similar in groups B and C and we did not find differences of serum creatinine, serum urea, urinary osmolarity and fractional excretion of sodium between the three groups. No patient developed renal failure and all the patients of group B survived.
Conclusion: Hyperfiltration is a normal pattern in the critically ill patient.
