ABSTRACT
Objective: To establish a comparison between three methods to measure cardiac output in critically ill patients.
Design: Case series report.
Setting: ICU of a community hospital of Mexico City.
Patients: Fifty unstable ICU patients.
Interventions: None.
Measurements and main results: We measured cardiac output by transesophageal (EB), thermodilution (TD) and a theoric equation (TE, CO = 125 x BS/8.5 x C(a-v)O
2, where: CO = cardiac output, L/min, 125 constant, BS = body surface, 8.5 = constant y C(a-v)O
2 = arteriovenous oxygen content difference). Cardiac output measured by thermodilution was 10.2 ± 3.8 L/min, by EB 10.4 ± 3.6 L/min and by the theoric equation 6.2 ± 1.3 L/min (p ‹ 0.05).
Conclusion: CO measured by BE and by TD in this study was similar, but CO estimated by a equation was inexact.
