The geriatric patient in the critical care unit

ABSTRACT
Objective. To report our experience on the outocome of the elderly ICU patients.
Design. Case series study.
Setting. Multidisciplinary ICU of a private hospital of Mexico.
Patients. Five hundred and fifteen patients admitted to the ICU during 1997.
Interventions. None.
Measurements and main results. We divided the patients in three groups: A) < 65 years old, B) 66-80 years old and C) ›> 80 years old. Of the 515 patients admitted to the ICU 152 (29.5%) were older than 65 years old (mean age 74 years). The ICU mortality was: group A 33/330 (9.1%), group B 25/94 (21%), and group C 8/25 (24.2%); p ‹ 0.001.
Conclusion. The ICU mortality is greater in patients older 65 years old compared with patients under 65 years old in our hospital.
