ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the factors influencing survival after cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA) in an ICU.
Design: Retrospective study.
Setting: ICU of a teaching hospital of Mexico City.
Patients: One hundred twenty seven ICU patients (mean age 51.8 ± 18.5 years, range 17-91 years) suffering CPA.
Interventions: None.
Measurements and main results: Age, diagnosis, initial electrocardiographic (ECG) findings, previous use of inotropics drugs and Apache II score were registered. Of 127 patients, 24 (19%) were succesfully resuscitated and 9 (7%) were discharged in good conditions to home. The best prognosis was observed when cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) time was less than 18 minutes, initial ECG showed ventricular fibrillation and inotropics use was not necessary (p ‹ 0.05). Diagnosis, age, Apache II score were not related with the outcome.
Conclusion: CPA survival of ICU patients is related with CPR time, initial ECG findings and previous use of inotropics.
