ABSTRACT
Background and objective: Psychosocial adaptation is a useful resource to detect a patient’s degree of adjustment to internal and external changes imposed by a disease; such adjustment depends on many variables. This study pretends to contribute information to establish the association between certain social demographic factors and the degree and type of adaptation in patients with chronic lung disease.
Methods: Cross-sectional and analytic study of 231 hospitalized and outpatients with chronic lung disease from the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases Ismael Cosío Villegas. The
PAIS-SR and a sociodemographic questionnaires were applied.
Results: Considering the degree of total adaptation, the absence of a couple was a protective factor for low adaptation, whereas having a low income implied a 1.4 times higher risk for low adaptation. In the field of adaptation by dominion, men showed less emotional uneasiness and better self healthcare; people with lower income seemed to have less familiar support and less physical resources.
Conclusions: Low income and presence of a partner are factors that influence general adaptation; the last may be a consequence of dependant relationships precluding an appropriate adaptation. In accordance to theory, women were more susceptible to emotional difficulties and to be less engaged with their own healthcare.
