Ram effect on oestrus activity in Pelibuey ewes

ABSTRACT

Distribution of oestrus following the introduction of rams during the 1992 summer (June-July) was carried out in the flock of the "Centro de Investigacion, Enseñanza y Extension en Ganaderia Tropical" (20° 04' North latitude, 97° 03' West longitude). The objective of the study was to evaluate the ram's effect on oestrus activity in Pelibuey ewes. The breeding season was conducted every eight months by controlled mounting, and heat detection was performed using vasectomized rams. Rams were therefore, kept separatelly all year round except during the mating season (35 days). In this study oestrus activity started on days 17 (7.4%) and 23 (14.2%) of the season. This period included 70% of total oestrus in the flock. More than half of the ewes (66%) were mated before the third week of the season. Out the total number of animals in the herd, 90.5% of the ewes showed oestrus. Only 1% repeated. Analysed data showed that the sudden introduction of the ram influenced the ovarian activity in this breed in this tropical area.
