ABSTRACT
Introduction: Hemorrhagic stroke represents the leading cause of death in eclampsia and it’s frequently associated to a HELLP syndrome and high neonatal mortality. Brain stem is primarily affected in the majority of cases of hemorrhagic stroke in this patient.
Objective: The description, outcome and relation with microangiopathy of seven cases of eclampsia complicated with HELLP syndrome and hemorrhagic stroke.
Material and methods: Design Case series We revised all cases of women admitted to the obstetric intensive care unit (OICU) between January and December 2002. Analyzing hematological, hemodynamic, biochemical, topographic and clinical variables of nine patients associated to hemorrhagic stroke
Results: Eclampsia is the responsible of 96% of all admissions to the OICU. Stroke represents 2.3 % (7 cases) of all admissions with a 86% mortality finding evidence of microangiopathy in all of 7 cases.
Conclusion: Every patient with eclampsia and HELLP syndrome must be considered intensive attention including antihypertensive management and hemorrheologic therapeutic to improve their microangiopathic compromise
