ABSTRACT
Blood transfusion is an important key part of modern medicine, and blood centers have a great responsibility towards the community that requires safe blood components for all patients needing transfusion. This implies the need to ensure effective product availability, production methodology, inventory management, and appropriate transfusion therapy guidelines. To achieve this, the blood bank must develop an effective quality system, and promote high quality standards. This strategy should provide a framework within which blood bank activities are established, documented and continuously monitored to correct and prevent failures in order to improve its outcomes.
The key elements of a quality system include: commited management, resources, equipment, purchases, process control, control of nonconforming product and services, internal and external assessments, process improvement, infrastructure, and work environment. Our participation in the IMSS quality award has been an important tool that has allowed us to implement a comprehensive quality management system, where customer requirements and environmental changes are taken into account in order to meet our organizational purposes, based on criteria and principles that are key elements to implement an integration systems methodology.
